The dealer does mostly everything for you in Baccarat. All you need to do is place your bet on either the player's hand, the banker's hand, a tie, player pair or banker pair. Everything else is done automatically for you. The dealer will then deal two cards to each hand, starting with the player's hand. If either hand has a total value of eight or nine, this is called a "natural" and no additional cards will be dealt. If neither hand has a natural, the player's hand will be acted upon first by the dealer.

Baccarat is a card game played with six or eight decks of cards. The objective of the game is to bet on the hand that will have the highest total value of 9 in either the player's hand or the banker's hand. You can also bet on a tie or pairs but this is less common... When the total value of the cards go over 9 for either the player's hand or the banker's hand, the digit on the left is removed. Example, if the player has an 8 and a 7, the total is 15 but the 1 is removed and the new total is 5.

Card Values

In Baccarat, the cards have different values than they do in other games. Aces are worth one point, cards 2-9 are worth their face value, and 10s and face cards (jacks, queens, kings) are worth zero points.

Player's Hand

If the player's hand has a total value of six or seven, they will stand and no additional cards will be dealt. If the player's hand has a total value of five or less, they will receive a third card. If the player does receive a third card, the banker's hand will be acted upon next by the dealer.

Banker's Hand

If the player stands with a total value of five or less, the banker will receive a third card if their total value is five or less. If the player receives a third card, the banker will act according to the following rules:

• If the banker's total value is two or less, they will receive a third card.
• If the banker's total value is three, they will receive a third card unless the player's third card was an 8.
• If the banker's total value is four, they will receive a third card if the player's third card was between 2 and 7.
• If the banker's total value is five, they will receive a third card if the player's third card was between 4 and 7.
• If the banker's total value is six, they will receive a third card if the player's third card was between 6 and 7

Winning and Losing

Once all cards have been dealt, the hand with the highest total value wins. If you bet on the player's hand and it wins, you'll receive a payout of 1:1 (i.e., double your bet). If you bet on the banker's hand and it wins, you'll also receive a payout of 1:1, but you'll have to pay a commission of around 5% to the casino. If you bet on a tie and it wins, you'll receive a payout of 8:1 or 9:1, depending on the casino. If you bet on player pair and the player's first two cards are the same value, you will receive a payout of 11:1. If you bet on banker pair and the banker's first two cards are the same value, you will receive a payout of 11:1

Tips and Strategies

While Baccarat is largely a game of chance, there are a few tips and strategies you can use to improve your odds of winning: Stick to the banker's hand: Statistically speaking, the banker's hand has a slightly better chance of winning than the player's hand.
